The Basics of Valve Bag Filling Equipment

Choosing the right machine for for filling valve bags, depends on how the material is fed into the machine; air, auger, impeller or gravity. These machines are most commonly used to bag products like cement, concrete, minerals, fertilizer, resins, chemicals, flour, starch, feed, salt, sugar and wood.

Valve bag fillers are commonly referred to as valve bag packing machines, valve bag packers, air packers, or valve bag filling machines.

 

What is a Valve Bag?

Valve bags are are pre-formed bags with a fill spout, or valve, in one corner, to allow for fast and easy filling. The valve’s inner flap functions as a self-closing check valve (no secondary sealing step required) after filling. More of these versatile valve bags are used worldwide than any other bag style, as the valve sleeve can be manufactured in a variety of styles, to meet specific application needs including poly sleeves, tuck-in sleeves, heat seal and sonic-seal sleeves. Valve bags can be equipped with PE-free film or PE-liners, where enhanced moisture protection is needed.

Valve Bag Fillers Come in 4 Basic Types: Air, Auger, Impeller, and Gravity-Fed

Air Packers:

Sometimes referred to as Forced Flow or Pneumatic Packers, Air Packers are often used for filling bags with free-flowing, low humidity, dry flakes, powders & small size granules that cannot be heated, ground, or crushed. Applications: mortars, sugar, calcium carbonate, PVC pellets, and limestone.

Impeller Packers:

Sometimes called Turbine Packers, Impeller Packers are used for fine, dry, high bulk density powders of finer than 200 mesh, where crushing or fines are not an issue. Applications: fly ash, carbon black, portland and masonry cement, kaolin, clay, graphite, silica, and activated carbon.

Auger Packers:

Often called Screw Baggers, Auger Baggers are designed for flakes, powders, pellets, granules, and fibrous material. Applications: cellulose, fiber, compost, flour, insulation, limestone, minerals, pepper, pigment, plastic pellets, resins, crumbled rubber, salt, sand, sawdust, bakery mixes.

Gravity Packers:

Gravity baggers are best for free-flowing, high-density materials like flakes, granules, or pellets, where the material easily falls into a hopper. Applications: corn, grains, fertilizer, plastic pellets, salt, sand, soybeans, and sugar.

Advanced Systems with Valve Bag Fillers

For high volume production environments, valve bagging systems are configured with multiple bag filling machines in a row, matched with automatic bag placers, and automated robotic bag palletizing systems. Systems like this can bag and stack from 350-1,300 bags per hour, per line.

For increased automation on the line, many add bag flattening conveyors, check weighers, bag printing systems, metal detection systems and non-conforming bag reject conveyors, as well as stretch wrappers and stretch hooders, to apply load protection after bag palletizing. Systems like this reduce reliance on human labor and provide vastly increased productivity.
